Isra wal Mi’raj, The Journey of Transformation

Writer's picture: DinaDina

Prophet Muhammad was blessed with the experience of Isra (the Night Journey) and Miraj (the Ascension). A journey that has no parallel in human history, beginning from the Kaba in the city of Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in the city of Jerusalem, and concluding beyond the horizons of human comprehension in the heavens.

The occasion of Mi’raj signifies the Holy Prophet’s spiritual journey. The Qur’an says in the first verse of Surah al-Isra: “Glory be to (Allah) Who took His servant on a night journey from the Sacred place of prayer to the furthest place of prayer, the precincts of which We did bless, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Surely (Allah) is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.” (Quran 17:1).

In my humble understanding,

our own spiritual journey may be seen as a reflection of the Prophet’s Isra` and Mi’raj.

Isra is the symbol of external journey. It could be travelling experience, healing experience, from sickness to health, from separation to union and many more experience form one point to another point. It is a new beginning, it is a journey with a process of purification and beautification of ourselves.

Mi’raj signifies a journey of spiritual transformation, the journey inward to ourselves, our own personal search for the Truth and Love. The journey in the depths of our heart, in search of God the Almighty. By which we will be able to realize our ultimate journey towards the eternal bliss of coming in His presence.

On the day of celebration Isra wal mi’raj, we all reminded of what have we do to know the purpose of our life.
