Good Friday - Contemplation on the Symbolism of the Cross

Writer's picture: DinaDina

Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and death.

In the seventh century, the Church in Rome adopted the practice of Adoration of the Cross from the Church in Jerusalem, where a fragment of wood believed to be the Lord's cross had been venerated every year on Good Friday since the fourth century.

The most quintessentially Christian object of devotion is a crucifix-a cross as a sign of Christ's resurrection and victory over sin and death.

Actually according to Rene Guenon in his book Symbolism of the Cross; the cross is a symbol which in its various forms is met with almost everywhere, and from the most remote times far from belonging peculiar and exclusively to Christian tradition as some may attempt to believe. The cross is regarded as a symbol of union of complements.

The vertical line is taken as a representing the active principle (activity of the Heaven) and the horizontal line is passive one (plane of reflection). At the center of the cross, therefore all oppositions are reconciled and resolve, which is symbolized as the Divine Presence.

In humble understanding, the center of the cross is our heart which is the Divine presence, which should be connected and lived in accordance with the Divine guidance.

Hopefully the image of the Cross may help each of us to learn more and how we are to imitate Jesus example.
