God said, "The fast is Mine."

Ramadan, the fasting month is often greeted by the Sufis as a good friend and as a welcome and honored guest. If we compare with other actions of worship, fasting is the only one that there is no visible aspect of it. According Ibn ‘Arabi; “fasting in reality is non-action, not action. It is neither worship nor action.” The negation of likeness is a negative attribute. Therefore the relationship between it and God is strengthened.

An Islamic scholar who is also a sufi Seyyed Hossein Nasr describes the fasting component of Ramadan as a way for one to create an empty space within which “the Divine message descends.”

The biological desires for food, drink, and sex—yearnings for nourishment—are really symbolic of one’s yearning for Al-Razaq (The Nourisher) one of the 99 names of God.

Since all nourishment comes from The Nourisher, one’s hunger, thirst, or lust is at its most basic level a desire for unification with The Creator.

Let’s welcome this fasting month with the attitude of awareness of our mind and our action with the heart which always being present in His Sacred Name. Hopefully, we become the empty vessel and may God fill us with His light.
